Before you Leave
18th-21st May 10am-6pm
Brunel Goods Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP
Following the successful group pop up show Roots curated by Tamzin Malleson at the Stroud Music Centre last November, many of the artists involved are collaborating again. Another pop up, this exhibition is entitled Before You Leave. Exhbiting artists are Abigail Fallis, Tamzin Malleson, Colin Glen, Polly Glen, Jo Fry, Micha Leese, Tam Ingles, Simon Noble, Lorraine Robbins, Manuel Huertas, Oliver Marsden, Ralph Mcartney and Julie Howe. As with Roots the participating artists respond to the title of the show through their chosen medium. They will tie their work in with the venue – the restored Brunel former Goods Shed alongside Stroud train station. This is the perfect site for any visitors wishing to come along and experience the eclectic mix of work presented by these artists, all bought together by friendship and their passion for the Stroud area. Curated by Briony Fforde and Jo Fry. |

Get the Blessing
Saturday 19th May 8.30am-11pm
SVA, 4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA
Bristolian jazzy post-rockers Get The Blessing return to the Site Festival. With the release of their third album OC DC this March, Get The Blessing are once again elbowing their way out of easy categorisation. As winners of the 2008 BBC Jazz Award win for Best New Album they wear their jazz credentials lightly but defiantly. A shared love of legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman’s early quartet inspired their boldly monophonic instrumentation. The intricate but absolutely rock-solid rhythm section forms the glue that holds Get The Blessing together, with the dual sax and trumpet frontline working with the bass to create melodies and harmonies. This Site Festival highlight will be a fantastic opportunity to explore the fascinating and idiosyncratic musical world of the Get The Blessing.
Tickets: £7.50 advance, £10 on the door

Garlanding the World. Jamilla Gavin
Sunday 20th May 5pm-6pm
SVA, 4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA
A storytelling event for all the family with Jamila Gavin. Jamila Gavin was born in India and grew up on the border between India and Pakistan. She first visited England when she was five, and settled here for good when she was eleven. She wrote her first book when her children were born because she realised that there were very few books that reflected their experience of being multi-racial. In later stories, and particularly in her Surya Trilogy, she drew on her own childhood memories of growing up in India. In particular, the relationships between English and Indian families at a time when India was becoming an independent country. Her novel, Coram Boy, set in 18th century England, won the 2000 Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year Award. Free |

Saturday 26th May 9am-12 noon Saturday 26th May 7pm-9pm
Brunel Goods Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP
Designer Anna Usborne, from SVA, has teamed up with local architects Millar Howard Workshop to make a pop up restaurant in the Goods Shed as a place to meet, eat and encounter art. They have designed and made a series of cast concrete tables and produced the Star Chair, designed by architect Dave Wilson at Millar Howard Workshop. Together these elements aim to respect the building's historic industrial past whilst offering a contemporary intervention in the Goods Shed. Hobbs House Bakery will be providing the food. They can chart five generations of bakers in the family, from early 20th Century roots in Gloucestershire right through to Tom Herbert, father of 4 aspiring, potentially 6th generation bakers. Born with flour on their fingers Tom Herbert and his brother Henry have recently been seen on their popular TV series The Fabulous Baker Brothers.
