Robbins and Roberts present
Yore Emmeness
New works by Kate Merry and Daniel Sparkes
12 December - 17 January
Private view Friday 12 December 5-8pm
Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays 10-4
SVA 4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA
Emerging from the genre of Comic Abstraction, Merry and Sparkes apply interventions into the quotidian fabric of life, injecting it with dark, comic motifs. Kate Merry creates playfully mutated hyper-idols that are simultaneously staunch and titillating. Found objects and painted clay combine in appealingly abject sculptures, strange and colourful products of a pervasive cognitive dissonance.Daniel Sparkes works predominantly in 2D, making dusty graphite drawings and using paint that flows like Peyo's ectoplasm onto found imagery, all with his uniquely absurd 'Seussian' landforms. The fused cartoon elements impose a personal gallows vision awkwardly onto our conventional, now seemingly flatter, world. |

Robbins and Roberts present
100% Acrylic: Jessie James
14 February - 28 February
Private view Friday 13 February 6-9pm
Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays 10am-4pm
SVA 4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA
Recent Camberwell graduate, Jessie James will be in residency at Robbins and Roberts throughout February, culminating in a 2 week exhibition.James' practice could best be described as process-based; process and experimentation provide the means by which the work is conceived and developed. Her colour-saturated videos and installation work have the formal qualities of abstract painting, but the use of texture and 3D elements enables James to express a more idiosyncratic approach. The result is confident work that ranges from the visually immersive to the more discrete and intimate. |

Black Orpheus
Sunday 22 February
doors open 7.30pm, film screening 3pm
4 John Street, Stroud, GL5 2HA
Black Orpheus is the 1959 film by Marcel Camus, recreating the Orpheus and Eurydice myth in the Rio carnival; it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes that year and also a Golden Globe and an Oscar for best foreign-langauge film a year later. Breno Mello is the Orpheus who falls for his Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn) during the Rio carnival, a spectacle that vanishes when Orpheus encounters a voodoo ceremony at which the voice of his Eurydice is channelled by a woman standing behind him - and he may not turn round. An inspired reinvention of the underworld.

Music Doc
The Road to God Knows Where
Thursday 26 February 6pm
4 John Street, Stroud, GL5 2HA
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ classic 1989 US road documentary. German director Uli M Schueppel set out on a five week odyssey of the USA in 1989 with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. What he expected was not exactly what he got, but what he got was just what he wanted. The result is a far cry from the usual rock’n’roll lifestyle cliches and slick life productions of the average music “film”. Truth is stranger than fiction.
