  Ed Davenport image

John Street Social Club hosted by Ed Davenport
Friday 5 July 5-11pm
SVA, 4 John St, Stroud, GL5 2HA

An evening of electronic music and accompanying archive film. Over the last two years Ed Davenport has been releasing emotionally powerful, texturally rich and structurally inventive electronica on the Highpoint Lowlife label. Always carrying a strangely evocative geographical feel, 10-20 last 4 EP’s for the label were a collective sequence under the title of Landforms. Whilst Ed has always dealt in fractured, fragmented textures and glitches, these were wrapped up in a chunky production of rich clarity. Magnet Marsh on the other hand engages with the idiosyncrasies of magnetic tape whilst the 10-20 sound has plummeted through a surreal wormhole of crumpled sublimity.

Master Drumming Class
Sunday 7 July 1pm

Goods Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP

Hassan Erraji is a blind Moroccan Master Musician – a singer songwriter, multi instrumentalist, arranger and composer, entertainer and story teller with a highly respected international reputation. Born in the village of Tazart, south of Marrakech, Hassan was introduced to music at an early age and as a young boy made his first instrument from a tin can and a piece of wood with bicycle brake cables for strings. Erraji embraces a thoroughly current and very danceable contemporary global sound, whilst these new songs of burning passion memorably re-ignite the ancient & magical fire of stately bass & derbuka-driven Berber rhythms, and move effortlessly across a glamorous mosaic of lush Arabic oud & qanun power-chords and soaring taarab-style strings.

Hassan Erraji will be leading a master drumming class (1pm) and performing in the evening (doors open at 6pm).

Co-hosted by Golden Fleece Trading Company who will decorate and be trading at the venue with their quality Moroccan crafts.

There will be delicious middle eastern food provided by Hazel Haziz. The vegetables will be organic as far as possible and the lamb will be free-range. The menu will be Moroccan Lamb Tagine (with saffron, apricots, dates, raisins, almonds, honey, tomatoes, onion, garlic, paprika, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, fresh coriander & parsley) and Moroccan Vegetable Tagine (with spinach, carrots, onions, garlic, tomatoes, courgettes, red & green peppers, aubergines, broad beans, chick peas, smoked paprika). Both dishes to be served with lemon & herb couscous, stuffed vine leaves and a bit of home-made hoummus.

DJ set from Kate Merry (DJ Good Doggy)
Max Hart (Live and direct)

A night of shimmering R 'n' B grooves and tracks formerly known as contemporary. Kate Mezz will be spinning tracks from her blessed record bag which is lined with decades of modesty. Kate Merry (DJ Good Doggy) is a DJ with over a decade's experience playing venues across the UK. With an encylopediac knowledge of just about every genre and band that has existed since 1900, and with a particular penchant for 80s and 90s RnB and dancehall riddims, if you're not moving at one of her nights you probably need to see a doctor, as anyone who's attended London's super-popular nights Packing Heat, Mad Priority (both founded by DJ Good Doggy) and Ladies Night or Dunk in New York's Brooklyn will attest. Clients include Diesel, Topshop, Patron Tequila, Urban Outfitters Louise Gray, Dazed & Confused, BEAT magazine, Grazia, Wolf magazine, You Me Bum Bum Train, Shoreditch House, Punch Drunk, Silent Disco. Elsewhere, she has DJ'ed for several private parties, including Bjork's NYE party in Reykjavic and a private festival at Eton.

We'll then break away from this for a power half hour...

  Mississippi music

QuJunktions presents
I don't feel at home in this world anymore
Film, stories & images from the Mississippi Records and Alan Lomax archive

Friday 2 August 8pm

With great pleasure, Qu brings to Europe the first proper label tour from the phenomenon that is Mississippi Records, featuring staggering and fascinating footage of musicians shot by the world famous song collector Alan Lomax as well as archival film, images & stories carefully dug out from Mississippi's archive, spanning 1890 to the present day.

Hosted by Eric Isaacson, who runs the Mississippi record store and label HQ in Portland Oregon, the show illustrates Eric's own special history of underground music movements and bona fide individuals from across the USA's wide cultural spectrum. The live footage performances are culled from rarely seen film shot during Alan Lomax's North American travels between 1978 to 1985, as well as Mississippi Record's own enormous library of folk blues, gospel, esoteric, international & punk music archives. Aside from the film screenings, Eric will present a slide show and a talk, take questions from the audience and DJ songs from his extensive 7” collection.

  Gajo in a car
Gadjo
Thursday 8 August 8pm
Goods Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP

Our favourite band of the summer is here again all the way from Barcelona. They came from furthest Gadjistan and choose Barcelona as the place where they would open their suitcases and air their instruments. Seven musicians bound by their Gadjistani culture, a rich and festive culture with bewitching rhythms and funny dances, exuberant, theatrical melodies and a mish-mash of languages. Gadjo have toured extensively through Europe, sowing their musical mayhem as they go, from gypsy-cumbia, balkanic-ska to reggae-swing and surf tango. Sometimes they appear playing an intimate acoustic set on the market square, sometimes under the lights of a festival stage, but wherever it is expect the dust to fly as the music kidnaps your heart and lifts your feet into an unstoppable dance.

Tickets: £6 advance, £7 on the door
