Au Hasard Balthazar

Negative Space presents
Au Hasard Balthazar
4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA
Thursday 20 December 8pm-11pm
£4 (non-members) /£3 (members)

A stark, lyrical and affecting parable from the great French director Robert Bresson, this 1966 masterwork takes as its subject a humble donkey (named with wry irony after one of the Three Wise Men), following his trials as he’s passed from owner to owner and made the object of human cruelty - and love - along the way. A modern classic, described by Jean-Luc Godard as depicting “the world in an hour and a half.” Screening starts 8.30pm, with mulled wine and mince pies available at the bar from 8pm.

Hot feet

Hot Feet ‘Wood House’ album launch
Brunel Goods Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP
Friday 21 December 8pm
£6 advance £8 on the door

Hot Feet’s music lives and breathes in the countryside. ‘Wood House’ was written in a small cabin on the east coast of Sweden and recorded in a remote studio in the Scottish Highlands, only accessible by boat. The five songs are set, however, in the Cotswolds where Marianne (vocals) tends to goats and sheep when she’s not playing music, and Lachlan (bass) builds dry stonewalls. Musical influences include delta blues, sixties folk and world rhythms. Clamorous in places, delicate in others; sometimes offering raucous, earthy uproar and a wistful, yearning narrative within the same song. The EP has been lovingly and impressively produced by Pete Roe, longtime sideman of Laura Marling and a gifted songwriter in his own right.

  Russian Winter

A Russian Winter
Brunel Goods Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP

The Thirteenth Tree
an exhibition by Corinne Hockley

Sunday 13 January 5-7pm
Continues on Saturdays 19 and 26 January 11-4pm
Open during ticketed events and by appointment

Over Christmas the magical trees mysteriously moved out of the Museum in the Park and found themselves a new home for January in the Brunel Goods Shed. This reinterpretion by Corinne Hockley shows the exhibition in a totally new context. Deep in the Forgotten Forest, beyond the thrice-nine lands, at the borders of the thrice-ten kingdom there stands a tree…Inspired by a train journey through the vast, snow-silent Russian winter, this exhibition is a meeting place for the themes, creatures & spirits of a hidden world. Full of twisted yarns and unexpected encounters, this place beyond time is heavy with whispers of the familiar and the strange. Weaving northern and eastern European myths within a magical textile landscape, The Thirteenth Tree encourages us to recognise the archetypes that continue to live on in folklore and fairy tales – enchanting us, and sharing their wisdom if bidden.

Followed by a free screening of The Firebird at 7.30pm after the exhibition opening.
A Russian Winter will present a film screening programme, storytelling and more. Event updates to follow.

Rites of Spring

A Russian Winter film screenings - The Rite of Spring
Saturday 26 January 7.30pm

The Rite of Spring, French title Le Sacre du printemps is a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was written for the 1913 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company, with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky and stage designs and costumes by Nicholas Roerich. When the ballet was first performed, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on 29 May 1913, the avant-garde nature of the music and choreography caused a near-riot in the audience. In celebration of the debut of the Ballet Russes in Paris, 1909, this wonderful Stravinsky evening at the Mariinsky Theatre (cond. Valery Gergiev) showcases the original Nijinsky choreography of The Rite of Spring. Russian stew, vodka and hot water bottles! Bring your own hot water bottle cover!

Team Work Crime, prisons and offenders – the role the arts can play
Angela Findlay

SVA, 4 John Street, Stroud, GL5 2HA
Thursday 24 January 7.30pm
£4 on the door

At the age of 21 Angela Findlay walked into Long Bay Gaol in Sydney with a portfolio of her murals under her arm. Two weeks later she found herself in front of a 30-foot wall with a motley selection of paints and brushes, two Brazilian coke smugglers, a bank robber and a murderer. ‘I had this overwhelming sense of “This is it!”’ she recalls. Years of working as an artist in the Criminal Justice Systems in England and Germany have given Angela unique insights into the lives and minds of offenders. Her innovative and initially controversial approaches to rehabilitation through the arts attracted recognition from even the biggest sceptics. In this thought-provoking illustrated talk she provides intimate glimpses into the closed world of prisons offering a deeper understanding of the complex cycle of crime and re-offending and demonstrates the powerful role the arts can play within it.

Heart of Glass

Negative Space presents Heart Of Glass
4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA
Thursday 31 January 8pm-11pm

Beginning a short season of films which have inspired visual artists, Negative Space presents Werner Herzogs startling 1976 feature Heart Of Glass, frequently cited as an inspiration by British filmmaker and artist Ben Rivers. Set in an 18th century German village, it concerns the decline of the local glass-factory - and the local barons desperate turn for advice about the future to a young cowherd with a reputation for clairvoyance. This enigmatic story is rendered stranger still by Herzogs insistence that the entire cast perform under hypnosis, their oddly distanced performances and oracular speeches evoking what Rivers describes as mythic time and highlighting that this is an incredible and fortuitous moment in the larger geological time of the Earth, or even the universe.

Wednesday 6 February 8pm
4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA

Resound kicks off again at SVA with quiet, almost still, music and field recordings. Combining Harold Budd and Eno inspired piano and electronic soundscapes, sublime and poetic cello and pointillist dapples of percussion, Andrew, Celine and Peter present an evening of lower case improvised music, all set to a suitably fragmentary and ethereal video backdrop. Following, there will be the chance to see a highly informative documentary on French "avant-garde" composer, Eliane Radigue which observes her at work in her studio, operating the ARP synthesizer she is famous for using and talking about the process of composing and recording. “Sometimes it was enough to barely touch one of the recording or playback potentiometers”

negative space Negative Space presents
Tina Goes Shopping and Tina Takes a Break

4 John St, Stroud GL5 2HA
Thursday 21 February 8pm-11pm

For our second in a short season of films which have inspired visual artists, Negative Space presents two uncompromising comedies, Tina Goes Shopping (1999) and Tina Takes a Break (2001), both directed by Penny Woolcock - cited as a major inspiration by British filmmaker and artist Clio Barnhard (The Arbor). Made in collaboration with the residents of a tough Leeds council estate, these visceral and moving films sit somewhere between documentary and fiction. Using the real life stories of the estate residents - in Tina Goes Shopping a single mum steals to order for her "shopping" business; in Tina Takes a Break she tries to organise a holiday in Blackpool - Woolcock says she made the films as fiction so she could tell the truth, an approach that Barnhard has cited as a key influence: "The paradox that you can't tell the truth by making a documentary has fascinated me for a long time and is at the root of my current practice."
