Sally Hampson, an artist and weaver, took residence in an empty shop in Stroud High Street in early 2012. This residency supported by SVA, has enabled Sally to develop her practice and engage visitors in the weaving process. Now through lots of visitor interest and successful Awards For All funding Sally is offering free weaving workshops.*

The looms will be set up for you so you can get weaving straight away. You will explore techniques to create different texture and surfaces. Learn how to set up a loom yourself and how the loom works.

Rag rug weaving
Weave your own samples for a potential rug, learn about the tradition from Finland, America and the north of England. Bring along some of those bits of fabric you have lovingly gathered and saved in the hope of ‘one day, now is your chance’.

Wool weaving workshop
Weave your own samples for a potential scarf, shawl or blanket, learn about our indigenous weavers from the Outer Hebrides and their tweed weaving tradition. If you have some weaving wool you would like to try do bring it along.

Experimental weaving
Weave your own collection of treasured, tickets postcards and precious, detritus gathered on a journey and have remained in that shoe box, liberate them into a woven diary.

Sally Hampson biography

Sally Hampson, international artist has worked on projects in Egypt and Sinai with Bedouin women, which has taken her out into remote parts of the desert and more recently to Ethiopia and Kenya. The richness of these cultures continues to inspire and influence her work. Combining these journeys with research and collaboration with anthropologist and explorer Kitty Lake, the resulting collections have previously been shown at both the Pitt Rivers and Horniman Museums.

This project is supported by Awards For All Lottery funding and SVA.
