  Last Picture Show

The Last Picture Show

Friday 28 Sept 8pm
Brunel Goods Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP

The Last Picture Show is one of the key films of the American cinema renaissance of the seventies. Set during the early fifties, in the loneliest Texas nowheresville to ever dust up a movie screen, this aching portrait of a dying West, adapted from Larry McMurtry’s novel, focuses on the daily shuffles of three futureless teens—the enigmatic Sonny (Timothy Bottoms), the wayward jock Duane (Jeff Bridges), and the desperate-to-be-adored rich girl Jacy (Cybil Shepherd)—and the aging lost souls who bump up against them in the night like drifting tumbleweeds, including Cloris Leachman’s lonely housewife and Ben Johnson’s grizzled movie-house proprietor. Featuring evocative black-and-white imagery and profoundly felt performances, this hushed depiction of crumbling American values remains the pivotal film in the career of the invaluable director and film historian Peter Bogdanovich.(1971)

  Craig Croften

Stroud Jazz Sessions jam with special guest Craig Crofton
Brunel Goods Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP
Thursday 11 Oct 8.15pm

Expatriate American tenor sax player Craig Crofton has been living and working in Bristol in Bath for 15 years. When he arrived in the UK he already had considerable technical skills and they have only grown over the years. There are, however, a lot of pro players with technical skill; what sets Craig apart is the visceral excitement in his playing: the attack, the acute sense of rhythm, the drama; it is an assault on the senses, but one that is followed up with unceasing ideas. It strikes one as a very American approach. Over the years, Craig's playing style, always marked by big, bold tone, has moved vaguely from Pharaoh Sanders to Sonny Rollins, but it would be a mistake to read too much into these associations. He'll give a short performance as special guest, before our open jam. Stroud Jazz Sessions is a hub for jazz enthusiasts and performers, every 2nd Thurs of the month.
£4 entry (£3 performers)

  The Raun Tree

The Raun Tree, by Dom Coyote & Other Stories
Brunel Goods Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP
Sat 13th October 8pm

A twisted, apocalyptic fairytale, told through ten songs.
The Raun Tree is an apocalyptic fairytale, told through epic music and compelling storytelling, written and performed by musician/theatre maker Dom Coyote and a group of superb accompanying musicians.
A young boy is lost and alone, in a strange, dreamlike world. He is searching for his way home, with only the mysterious Raun Tree and the old man that lives within it to guide him. The story is a balance of light and dark; innocence and nostalgia blend with visions of barren landscapes and the ruins of cities.
Dom Coyote is an associate artist with Kneehigh Theatre and works as musician and theatre-maker with companies such as Art Angel, Royal Shakespeare Company and The Cultural Olympiad. He is joined by award winning Songwriter Emily Barker (BAFTA), Nat Butler and Adrian Acolatse (Rhythm Section for Mercury Prize Winner Speech Debelle). A unique set design has been developed by theatre designer Michael Vale.

Developed at BAC and West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Funded by Arts Council England.

  Simon Ryder

A Natural History of Pseudomorphs
An artists talk by Simon Ryder

SVA, 4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA
Thursday 29 November 7.30pm

Simon Ryder will present a performative lecture which will be based around his recent project in Portland Bill, Dorset which was co-commissioned by b-side and Ex Lab, and supported by National Coastwatch Institution. A Natural History of Pseudomorphs was inspired by the unique geology of the Jurassic Coast and the earth scientists who work to unlock its secrets. Gaining access to contemporary scanning processes used by geologists and archaeologists enabled Simon to reveal the unseen – he explored the nuances of scale by contrasting what can be seen and understood with the naked eye with things that cannot. Focusing on the concept of the pseudomorph or ’false body’ Simon extended his personal understanding of how that might be used metaphorically to explore other Portland features, such as The Race. www.simonhryder.wordpress.com

Drawn To Stars Theatre Company's first tour of 'Now.Here' a true tale of two women, two hobby horses and two hundred miles.... They collected stories from every person they met on the way, and this summer took a one-hour show based on the stories to the Edinburgh Festival. The performance became a show filled with whimsy, reflection and cello music. Great reviews followed by Arts Council England funding has led enabled the show to be toured back along the original route, revisiting the places and people who originally inspired the work. www.drawntostars.co.uk
