Mezz #13 Ilana Halperin

Thursday 5 May
“One evening, someone approached me and said; 'I came across something I think you might be interested in – a collection of body stones'. Body stones? Body stones: gall stones, kidney stones, they are made of geology. From this conversation grew the idea that we as humans are also geological agents – we form geology. We are like volcanoes, producing new landmass on a micro scale.” Recently returned from Iceland and on her way to the new Turner Contemporary in Margate for a performative lecture, Mezz is pleased to present Ilana Halperin, who utilises text, delicate graphite drawings, sculpture, video and performance to explore our intimate relationship to the seemingly distant and abstract world of plate tectonics, in her quest to develop art objects formed within a geological, or deep time context. For Mezz #13 Ilana will first be showing some work from her Physical Geologyseries, followed by a talk entitled Autobiographical Trace Fossils: “a field dispatch on the nature of new landmass of a cultural, biological and geological nature – from petrifying caves in France, to geothermal pools in Iceland and a collection of body stones more animal than mineral.”

Resound presents: Stephan Mathieu, Matt Davis, TSU:
Jörg-Maria Zeger and Robert Curgenven

SVA Friday 6 May
£3.00 advanced £4.00 on door
An evening of sublime electronic tone float and immersive sound environments. Stephan Mathieu(Germany) combines the old and the new, playing a 19th Century Columbia phonoharp with subtle live processing from a laptop, transforming both to create work not only of majestic beauty but of mysterious and powerful emotion. Like producer Brian Eno at his finest or even Colorfield painters like Rohko, this is music that fills the head and space. Stephan has released 18 albums in the past decade, both solo and in collaboration on electronic music labels worldwide, performing live at festivals across Europe, Scandanavia, North- and South America as well as creating audio installations for galleries and museums. TSUIs Jörg-Maria Zeger, (Germany) and Robert Curgenven (Australia). Zeger’s guitar and vast array of effects with Curgenven’s custom vinyl, turntables and powerful field recordings from remote areas across the world together draw on the raw physicality of sound, described as “like riding on the front of a ship into a storm.”

8pm - 11pm (screening starts at 8.30pm) £3.00 on the door
Another startling tour de force from Argentinian-born, Paris-based director Gaspard Noé, whose confrontational – and controversial – work has made him a driving force in the new “extremist” French cinema. This hallucinatory evocation of the afterlife of a young drug dealer was hailed by the LA Times as “jaw-dropping, elusive, silly, obnoxious, painful and beautiful”. (Disclaimer: contains scenes of an explicit nature!)

Short Film Showcase 2011

SVA Thursday 19 May
6.30pm £3 on the door entry free for film makers.

An eclectic mix of movie making by young people under 25 will be showcased including feature, documentary, animation and - a new phenomena - flash films captured on mobile phones. Established film makers from the area will talk about their work and offer hints on how to make it out there in the rough and tumble of the world of film making. ‘This is the second showcase event. Last year some very good films were screened. This is an opportunity for anyone under 25 who has made a film of any sort, even on their mobile phones, to see it on the big screen with an audience’ said Rick Vick, the organiser, ‘last year film makers as young as 12 showed exciting films and of course there were many excellent films from both Stroud and Cirencester colleges.’ Supported by Stroud Arts Festival.
