Asylum

Negative Space presents Asylum

Thursday 21 March 8pm-11pm (screening starts 8.30pm)

The third in our short season of films which have inspired visual artists is Peter Robinson's 1972 documentary on the practice of Scottish psychiatrist R D Laing. Described by Turner Prize-nominated artist and filmmaker Luke Fowler as a "great influence on my own work", Robinson's intimate portrait of patients at Laing's London retreat Archways is both a wry and moving document of 60s idealism, a key work in the Direct Cinema school of documentary filmmaking and an inspiration for Fowler's recent film All Divided Selves, itself a meditation on Laing's life and ideas.

Zen Elephant

Zen Elephant Album Launch
Andy Oliveri and Jacob de Berker

Saturday 23 March 8pm

\Zen Elephant, a Bristol based Indie/Folk quartet are heading back on the road again with their new album "These open roads". Since forming in 2008 they have toured extensively in the UK and Europe. An original take on the Folk genre steers them away from any obvious comparisons to other bands. The sound is raw, while elements of Americana, Swing and Rock are thrown in. With performances at Glastonbury, Shambala, Secret Garden Party and many other UK festivals, Virtual Festivals described Zen Elephant as "Infectiously-vibrant, up-tempo folk", whilst MOJO gave them a thumbs up in their review of Green Man festival 2011.

Jeanne Dielman Negative Space presents
Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai Du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles

4 John St, Stroud GL5 2HA
Thursday 18 April 8pm-11.30pm (screening starts 8.30pm)

The fourth in our short season of films which have inspired visual artists is Chantal Akerman's three-hour study of the daily routine of a middle-aged widow, Jeanne Dielman. Made in 1975 when the Belgian director was just 24, its ground-breaking use of long, static takes has made the film a touchstone for artists working in film and video - not least Tacita Dean, who recalled, of seeing the film for the first time, "I remember how radical its length was, and how Akerman created tension through languor and boredom rather than through any sort of action. I thought it was an amazing film."
