Ganapati Clayman
A film by Andrew Wood and Jairo Sansone
Wednesday 21st May 7.30pm
SVA, 4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA
First public viewing of a documentary by a Stroud artist and Italian film maker. Shot in the Tuscan town of Cortona and the Cotswold town of Stroud, it is partly an extraordinary story of the spontaneous making of a film and partly a self portrait of an artist working on the final stages of a commission. The movie is a platform for the artist to share his thoughts and opinions about his working practice and the importance to him of music and dance, Hinduism and spirituality. He shares his gratitude for his life as a professional artist for the last 42 years. Most important of all, he talks of his life as an artist with a disability. This is not a film about sadness, regret or self pity. On the contrary, it is a film about joy and passion. It is life affirming and a valuable manual for those whose lives have been affected by an incurable disease. The film is 20 minutes long and will be followed by a Q&A with Andrew Wood.

A Space for the Bittern

in the Old Chancel, Waterhay
Saturday 24th–Sunday 25th May 10am-5pm
Live performance Saturday 24th. Minibus from Stroud 2pm-4pm
Access via farm track from Upper Waterhay Farm, Leigh.
Google: SN6 6QY
A church nave displaced by flooding, the migration of birdsong due to rising sea levels, the cyclic flow of waters at the source of the Thames, A Space for the Bittern weaves together historical events, current environmental data and future conjecture to explore our shifting relationship with water in a time of climate change. Situated on the southern edge of the Cotswold Water Park, this exhibition includes 3D-printed bronzes, animation, photography and a specially commissioned vocal soundscape by Eleanor Holliday, to create an imaginary space in which to consider how we might need to adapt in the future. ‘A Space for the Bittern’ is the concluding event of a residency in the Cotswold Water Park, hosted by the Cotswold Water Park Trust, funded by Arts Council England, curated by Lesley Greene. The exhibition is supported by Leigh Parish Council, the Churches Conservation Trust, Gloucester City Museum and SVA.

Simon Munnery Sings Soren Kierkegaard
Saturday 24th May 8pm
SVA, 4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA
Heard of Simon Munnery? Heard of Soren Kierkegaard? Heard of neither? ‘One of the funniest, most original comedians of the past twenty years’ (Guardian) will endeavour to perform selected extracts from Kierkegaard’s writing, talk about them, and anything else that springs from there. Buckle in. Simon Munnery, also known by his stagenames of Alan Parker: Urban Warrior and The League Against Tedium, is an English comedy writer and experimental standup comedian. Munnery's experimental style is reflected in his on-stage appearance: his unfashionable glasses, homemade clothes (or clothes apparently donated to him by comedian Jeff Green), makeshift props, and dramatic facial hair. The compere for the evening will be Jonny Fluffy Punk.
***** (Scotsman). ‘Munnery is an avant-garde comedy god’ **** (Time Out)
Tickets: £8 advance, £9 on door.
Advanced tickets can be bought online here
or from Trading Post, 26 Kendrick Street, Stroud GL5 1AQ |

John Wood and Paul Harrison - In Some Film
Friday 9th May 6-9pm
10th-25th May
Everyday 11am-6pm
SVA, Goods Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP
SVA, 4 John Street, Stroud GL5 2HA
The Site Festival 2014 will be opening with an exhibition of new work by John Wood and Paul Harrison in the Brunel Goods Shed in Stroud. This show will include 7 new video works linked by a sense of foreboding and violence, undercut by a lack of spectacle and drama. The show will also include over 50 small drawings and 5 large-scale drawings. Much of the work takes, as a starting point, a generic cinematic moment. This moment is then extended through repetition or super slow motion to become the entirety of the work. It is no longer just a part of the plot. It is the plot.
An exhibition catalogue will be available with text from Simon Munnery, writer and experimental standup comedian.John Wood and Paul Harrison are represented by Caroll/Fletcher in London. |
