“AS I WALKED OUT…”
OPPORTUNITY FOR ARTISTS

THE PROJECT
Fairgame Theatre in partnership with Stroud Valley Artspace (SVA) is inviting submissions from artists for a unique project; ‘As I Walked Out’.
This high profile project is funded by Gloucestershire local authorities and is a recognised Cultural Olympiad project – part of The Quest SW regional programme.
It is hoped that the project will be continued over three successive summers, although at this stage we are only recruiting for summer 2010.

The project will be a series of guided walks across the six districts of Gloucestershire from June-August 2010. Each leg of the journey will be approximately 6-9 days long and will incorporate a 3-day public camp, public guided walks and workshops.

Artist Walks

The walks will create time and space for artist to research and develop new ideas for work through the activity of walking and camping, directly experiencing
the Gloucestershire landscapes and engaging with other artists and the public. The selected artist will share a passion for the landscape and the ability to
encourage the public to appreciate their county and respond to the environment through their art practice. An important element of the project will be two donkeys
that will carry personal belongings, provisions and camping equipment. Their addition, as well as being a fantastic resource for artistic stimulus,
will ensure that the project has the lowest carbon footprint possible.

Public camps and workshops

In addition to the walks, each district will also have a designated public camp where people will be able to join the project for a night’s camping.
At each of these events, the artist will run two half-day workshop sessions working with the public. The camp will also be an opportunity for the artist
for that district to present, create, or perform some of the work that they have been inspired to do by their part of the walk.
We would welcome and encourage ideas that will inspire the campers to look at their county and the environment through fresh eyes.

Public guided walks

In each of the six public camps there will be two specific and structured guided short walks, which will be widely marketed and available free of charge to
interested groups and members of the public. Artists will not be expected to guide and lead these walks; their role will be to participate and engage the walkers in creative activity.

Project Launch
The project will be launched at the first public camp will be the ALIAS Art Camp, Westley Farm as part of the Site festival 2010.
