Artists Talks and Discussions at SVA
Thinking Landscape
Tuesday 23rd June 2am-5.30pm
The landscape genre, in the visual arts, performance and writing,
continues to reinvent and extend itself conceptually into agendas
around space, place and identity. It is developing ever-more complex,
cross-disciplinary methodologies, in the wider context of sustainability
and climate change. This seminar will explore some of the emerging
contours, layers and boundaries of the field, focusing on the thinking,
approaches and work of local artists, writers and arts groups, in
advance of a major symposium on landscape planned for Stroud, in
October. A collaboration between PhotoStroud, SVA and Stroud College
in Gloucestershire, the seminar builds on new initatives in the
Stroud Valleys and precedes one of the ‘Figuring Landscapes’
evening screenings presented by Mezzanine for site09

An exploration into the process of healing lies at the heart of
this talk by artist Carolyn White and herbalist and healer, Nathan
Hughes. A series of paintings and pastels from 'visualisations'
arising out of Nathan's treatment at Ruskin Mill Apothecary heralds
a new creative landscape for Carolyn White.
Joseph Beuys: the man, his art and his world

Cliff Gorman will explore Joseph Beuys’ influences and influence.
Beuys was one of the most important artists in the 1970/80's. His
solo exhibition, 30 years ago, at the Guggenheim Museum in New York,
created such a furore that patrons swarmed the sales desk demanding
their money back, after seeing what they considered fraudulent art.
At the same time in Germany 'Der Spiegel’s' cover was devoted
to a picture of Beuys (a rare occurrence for a living artist) that
led with the question: "Beuys, charlatan or genius?" Today
his ideas still have the power to create waves. Beuys was a founder
member of the German Green Party, an environmental artist and campaigner.
His statement 'Everyone is an Artist' encapsulates the importance
he gave to art. He wanted to expand the very notion of art and considered
his teaching as his most important art. Beuys studied the works
of Rudolf Steiner. Some argue that all his art was influenced by
Steiner
