The large format images were commissioned by Knowle West Media Centre as part of a campaign in Knowle West. The images have been on the railings on Leinster Avenue for over a year and have been adjusted by passers by. There is a prevailing theory that you can't exhibit work in this kind of environment because it won't survive, although in my recent work I am trying to contend some of these negative paradigms. The four portraits are of local people mainly from the Filwood area of South Bristol.
Simon Poulter has spent the last three years investigating deprivation in England, including periods of time in Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol and London. During this time he has devised a series of site specific works located in these communities. The work explores the friction between culture, urban regeneration, government instrumentalism and those who live in disadvantaged communities. Simon is a founding member and director of PVA MediaLab in Bridport
