No More Painting

The installation involves an attempt to re enact the painting of a wall as part of the redecoration of the SVA building. The projected image can be seen to be a memory mould into which the artist aims to fit their physical presence. The work is part of a new series entitled ‘Conditioner’, which takes elements of the previous ‘Recreation’ project and applies them to experience of place. The title is taken from Marcel Duchamp’s statement to of 1912 ‘Marcel, no more painting, go get a job’. The idea of working on the building in the capacity of a tradesman came when the redevelopment of SVA began in February 2005 when I presented the Recreation project in the front project space. I thought of ways to stay in the building and planned to get a job with the construction company as a labourer. However, I decided not to allow the work to be subsumed by the ‘real’ world and stay in art’s area of visibility, and of the building as an art space rather than a building site. So when the offer of some painting work came up to prepare for move in, I found the opportunity to test the transformations of identity from painter to painter.
